Empowerment
Clearly, buying or building a yacht suitable for ocean sailing is not within everyone’s budget or plan, and sailing around the world east to west and north to south is not what everyone wants to do. But those are not the only options. You don’t have to own a yacht and you don’t have to sail everywhere. Lots of people own yachts and don’t sail anywhere, let alone everywhere. However, we now fortunately have a yacht and plan to sail it extensively with the goal of sailing around the world and we have extra spaces on the yacht for other people to join us on the adventure. It can comfortably and safely hold six people in a very civilized fashion, and at a push, eight when near land (life raft carries six people). So we can share our adventure with others.
This means that if you meet the vessel’s criteria, you can join Juno at a selected port and become part of the crew. We will teach you everything you need to know to operate a decent-sized yacht. You will stand watch, cook food, maintain cleanliness, fish, raise – douse – furl and set sails, crank winches and belay lines, etc. We will also enjoy new cultures and food, hiking, shopping, diving, swimming, and all the joys and risks that sailing offers. We are not formal trainers and will not issue any certificates. But based on the experience gained on Juno, you would be able (and perhaps keen) to charter your own yacht with friends in places such as the Med, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Pacific NorthWest, Florida or the Caribbean.
Subject to meeting the vessel’s criteria (at the captain’s sole discretion), Juno will welcome crew members in shared or sole accommodation* on a full board and lodging basis for the duration of their stay. The captain has the responsibility for the crew and the vessel’s safety while the crew has the responsibility of obeying the captain. We will describe this further before you come aboard.
The payment rate per guest (you) to the vessel to cover the costs of your stay will be as follows in US Dollars:
Time period | Per Single (come alone) Shared | Couples or Family in Same Cabin | Sole Required* |
---|---|---|---|
Day | $50 | $45 | $75 |
Week | $300 | $275 | $450 |
Month | $1,000 | $900 | $1,500 |
All rates in US Dollars paid in advance, no cards accepted, cash or transfer. |
Suitability
Not everyone is suited to close living in a potentially uncomfortable environment, we recognize this. Prior to being accepted as a crew member we will have an interview (online) and ask questions which will hopefully prevent future unfortunate situations. Most folks who join are keen to learn, humble about what they know, willing to be part of the adventure, open minded about being with strangers and respectful of each others space, values, beliefs and cultures. The Captain has the final say on everything.
The Captain is responsible for every crew members safety and will stop at nothing to protect each person. Any crew who exhibits behaviour that is anti-social in the view of the Captain, will not be welcome on Juno. If they are already on the boat, they will be put off at the next port and if necessary, will be reported to the local authorities.
People with dietary restrictions, who have declared them at interview, will be accommodated as best we can, except where there may be a life-threatening adverse reaction to something (food or insects etc.). The vessel is equipped with first-aid equipment and as much supporting product as we reasonably can acquire and carry, but we are NOT paramedics or doctors and your risks may be too high when we are far from help.
When at sea in a yacht everyone is in close quarters and respect must be shown to each other when it comes to personal neatness, bodily functions, personal hygiene, eating habits, showering, toilet usage, nudity and intimacy. The Captain will protect the rights and guide the responsibilities of all the crew and maintain a mature and respectful vessel.
There will be zero smoking, vaping or any other form of drug usage on the vessel. Crew on prescribed medication will confidentially declare this to the Captain who will maintain a log of what drugs are on board.
Pre-trip sailing
Once Juno is rigged and has bent on her sails, we will start trials and short distance trips in the Vancouver area. We will be inviting friends and supporters to join us and will figure out costs at the time.
