BACKGROUND AND GOALS

Some Context to set the scene

flagBeginning

“Dreams and reality are often separated only by the decision to make one into the other,” said Leigh. Actually doing something that may be considered dangerous, stupid, or any other adjective isn’t one person making a superior choice over another. As it was in this case, it can often be an idea followed by a question, some reasonable consideration, and then a decision.

who we areWho we are

Grant, Craig, and I (Leigh) (from R-L) were born in South Africa and lived comfortable middle-class lives. We had families and then stayed or moved to New Zealand and Canada. As retirement loomed, we were faced with a sedentary future which we didn’t want. Grant and I shared the idea of a circumnavigation. Craig opted out, which was a reasonable choice. Thus, began this 8-year plan. We grew up mainly in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha – phonetically Kabega) and Amanzimtoti. I lived in Eswatini (Swaziland) and then in Durban before moving to Vancouver. Our folks were Arthur and Mary Harris from Cape Town. This is just for anyone who thinks they may know us. Please ask if in doubt.

Purpose

We are going to sail around the world and share that experience, in whole or in part, with as many people as possible. You can participate in many ways: read, comment, and share these blogs; think about joining us somewhere for one or several weeks; contribute in any way you see fit; or be inspired to do some or all of this yourself. A good friend made this comment at our dinner table: “You are empowering people to go and sail in places they have never considered possible.”

Goals

Through this site and YouTube videos on the BLOG page, we will provide interesting facts and “content” that show how anyone can embark on a great adventure, regardless of whether it’s on a grand or moderate scale, and in a time, mode, and style that suits them. Despite not being wealthy or skillful sailors, we prioritize safety and are conscientious in tallying the associated costs and commitments. By sharing our experiences, we aim to inspire anyone with the time and determination to use it as a blueprint to embark on their adventure. Our ultimate goal is to motivate people to step out of their comfort zones and pursue their aspirations.
